In military, situation arises when one unit is low on resources while fighting in a combat. In order to deliver the resources one needs to know where the unit is, achieved usually through GPS, and where is it moving towards. The unit, you are trying to deliver the resources to, might be following certain code of conduct. In this case you can predict the future moves of the unit. These predictions might not be completely accurate but roughly describe the pattern of your unit. Once you know the predicted path of the unit you need to find a delivery path. Delivery path could be constrained by roads, mines, rivers or even enemy forces, some of which are not known in advance instead, they are learned through experience. Similar situations also arise in RTS (Real Time Strategy) games such as Red Alert and Command and Conquer when your supporting units are trying to get to you with the supply. Simulation/Action games, like Counter Strike and Medal of Honor, also depict similar situation when you are covering your partner or a doctor trying to save you from injury. This problem falls under the domain of path-finding. Lots of search algorithms exist for path finding which could be applied to this scenario such as MTS, PR LRTS, PRA* and Trailblazer. These search algorithms chase a target without knowing the pattern of the target. If you know or can predict the future moves of your target i.e. your target is following a pattern then you can capitalize on that information. We focus on targets which have some sort of pattern in their movement. We try to estimate the pattern of our target and then move towards the estimated position of the target, using the path found by search algorithms.
